Tips to Help Texans Control the Cost of Auto Coverage

March 3,2010

Safe driving can go a long way; Texas motorists can make the cost of auto insurance affordable by simply obeying traffic laws.

Various factors are used to calculate the cost of car insurance in the Lone Star State; although some may not be in the control of motorists there is a major way that Texans can keep the price of automobile coverage affordable. Understanding one of the biggest factors used by insurers to determine premiums that can be controlled by consumers can possibly lead to lower rates.

Certain items used by insurers to determine rates such as a person’s age and gender cannot be controlled by a consumer, but a major factor used to calculate premiums can; this is a driver’s record. When applying for Texas auto insurance policies, companies heavily base rates on the driving history of the applicant and a Texan can take precautionary measures to help ensure that their record stays clean which in turn will keep rates down.

Accumulating numerous citations or causing automobile accidents will most likely drive up the cost of coverage and will continue to do so for a number of years; in addition, being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will also raise premiums, but practicing safe driving habits can help avoid these circumstances. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, “Most crashes in Texas result from speeding, failure to yield, driving under the influence of alcohol, following too closely and running red lights and stop signs.”

The items listed by the Department of Transportation can easily be avoided and can help lower the amount of accidents that occur in the state; when claims and losses are reduced, the chances are that the cost coverage will decrease as well. If more Texans refrain from committing traffic violations, they may not only lower their own premiums, but those throughout the state.

New law affects 18- to 24-year-old driver license applicants

Direct Link to Post

Starting March 1, 2010, driver license applicants between the ages of 18 and 24 must complete an approved driver education course and a driving skills test to become a licensed driver in Texas.  Applicants must submit a certificate proving that they successfully completed a driver education course approved by the Texas Education Agency.

Senate Bill 1317, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature in 2009, created this requirement and authorized the development of a six-hour adult driver education course to meet the needs of this group of drivers.

Applicants who present proof of successful completion of the approved course will not be required to submit to the written highway signs and traffic laws test required under section 521.161 of the Texas Transportation Code, but must still pass the driving skills examination.

A driving safety course or drug and alcohol driving awareness program are not acceptable as driver education courses for this requirement. A list of approved courses can be found here: http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/drive/activede.html.

This change in the law does not affect applicants ages 15 to 17, who are still required to complete a driver education course to be licensed.
