Corpus Christi, TX Crackdown on Uninsured Drivers

CORPUS CHRISTI — Corpus Christi police impounded 16 vehicles this weekend as a result of the department’s crackdown on uninsured drivers.

The traffic division conducted three checkpoints during the weekend, stopping a total of 250 vehicles and writing 95 citations. The 16 vehicles were impounded because the drivers failed to provide proof of insurance.

The checkpoints lasted about two hours each and were at the Crosstown Expressway southbound access road at Presa Street, the 5000 block of Wooldridge Road and the 4000 block of Woodriver Drive.

Police said one vehicle was not impounded even though the driver didn’t have proof of insurance. The driver, a mother with three children ranging in age from 2 to 9, didn’t have a cell phone to call someone to give the children a ride so she was issued a citation and encouraged to obtain proof of financial responsibility, police said.

Police last week issued a zero-tolerance policy for uninsured drivers and said they would be conducting checkpoints randomly throughout the year to verify proof of insurance and driver’s licenses.
